Some of Michigan's top girls flag football talent was on display Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Tom Adams Field on Wayne State's campus during the Girls' Flag Football Showcase , part of the 21st annual Amazon Prep Kickoff Classic.
The third-year event featured a doubleheader between four of the Michigan's top teams. Defending-champion St. Joseph squared off with Macomb L'Anse Creuse North in the opener, while state runner-up Gibraltar Carlson faced Redford Thurston in the nightcap.
St. Joseph continued its winning ways pulling off a 20-7 victory over the Crusaders, and Gibraltar Carlson shut out Thurston, 26-0.
Here are five players who stood out during Wednesday's event:
Jordan Sikora, QB, Gibraltar Carlson
Sikora's arm strength and accuracy was pivotal to the Marauders' success on Wednesday. A number of her passes came from deep and she connected with four receivers.
Lainie Dorow, QB/LB, St. Joseph
Dorow led the Bears to a 13-point victory over the Crusaders, but it didn't come easy. The senior quarterback, who was without her top receiver due to a dental procedure, threw all three touchdown passes but also had two interceptions. Dorow also contributed on defense with three flag pulls.
Brielle Grant, QB, L'Anse Creuse North
Grant led the Crusaders' opening drive to strike first against the Bears but struggled to get her team back on scoreboard afterward. Her arm strength was a factor in the game, as the team neared the Bears' end zone multiple times but came up short.
Aaliyah Lawson, WR/DB, L'Anse Creuse North
Lawson came up big for L'Anse Creuse as she had two interceptions against Dorow, giving the Crusaders second-chance opportunities to get back in the game.
Grace Peraino, WR/CB, L'Anse Creuse North
Periano was one of Grant's main targets to try and get Noth's offense going. Periano had a slow start in the first half but built some momentum after the half, hauling in some much-needed receptions.
