DeAndre Hopkins' brief experience as a member of the Patriots ' coaching staff has ended.
The veteran wide receiver joined Patriots training camp to explore what it would be like to become a full-time coach. Hopkins and New England head coach Mike Vrabel briefly overlapped twice previously, once with the Texans from 2014-17 and again with the Titans in 2023.
The addition of Hopkins to the staff was a surprise to open camp, as Hopkins hasn't officially retired from the NFL yet. However, with Hopkins on the back end of his career, the wide receiver is already considering what his life will be like when he retires.
Here's a look at Hopkins' time as a Patriots coach.

On Thursday, head coach Mike Vrabel announced that Hopkins was no longer with the team as an assistant coach.
"Well, it was a great experience. Hop's not here. But, it was a great experience for I think all of us," Vrabel said . "I think it's what you try to do when you have some of these unique situations where a player, or a former player, or whatever it may be wants to come in, and help, and learn, and they love football. And so, I think it was good for everybody."
After spending 13 seasons as a wide receiver in the NFL, Hopkins joined the Patriots this offseason in a coaching capacity while still being listed as a free agent. Hopkins hasn't officially retired, but this is a sign that he is exploring his post-playing career options.
During the start of training camp, Hopkins was working with the wide receiver room.

— Nicole Menner (@NicoleMenner) July 25, 2026 Vrabel also previously mentioned that Hopkins was getting experience with broader parts of coaching in his time with the team. Apparently, the plan was always for this stint to last just a few days.
"Him and I talked and he asked if he could come hang out for a couple of days and be around the coaches and be around the personnel department," Vrabel said earlier this week . "He's got coaching gear on, and he is helping out the offensive coaches and meeting with our personnel guys."
If Hopkins decides to get into coaching after retirement, the Patriots now appear to be a possible landing spot.
