NORMAN — Former SMU guard B.J. Edwards has committed to Oklahoma , The Oklahoman confirmed, giving the Sooners a major piece for the 2026-27 season.
Edwards was recently granted a fifth year of eligibility through a court ruling in Tennessee.
At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, he started the Mustangs' first 28 games last season before missing the rest of the season due to injury. Edwards averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists last season and was the only player nationally with three games of 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.
While awaiting a court ruling in Tennessee, Edwards signed a contract with the Sacramento Kings and played in the NBA Summer League, where he averaged 2.4 points in five games.
Coincidentally, the Sooners were left out of the NCAA Tournament for SMU, which was adamant Edwards would be available if the Mustangs were selected. Edwards ultimately didn't play in SMU's loss to Miami (Ohio) in the First Four.
Edwards played three seasons with the Mustangs after spending his freshman year at Tennessee. A Knoxville native, he scored 2,240 total points at Knoxville Catholic High School.
Edwards will join an OU squad that returns double-figures scorers Xzayvier Brown and Derrion Reid and is aiming to get back to the NCAA Tournament in coach Porter Moser's sixth season.
