Lionel Messi has been fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Soccer (MLS) for violating the league’s policy regarding contact with the face, head or neck of an opponent.
The incident unfolded during Inter Miami’s game against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday when a brawl broke out, leading to MLS investigating the matter and handing punishments to those found guilty. Reportedly, Messi struck Quinn Sullivan of the Union on the back of his head, which led to an altercation between the players.
In addition to Messi, his teammate Ian Fray has also been penalised after being found guilty of similar actions during the game.

Lionel Messi and Ian Fray face MLS punishment after heated clash
ESPN Soccer reported the update on its X handle (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Miami’s Messi fined by MLS for slapping opponent
Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi and Ian Fray have been fined undisclosed amounts for making contact in the head and neck area of opponents in separate incidents during second-half stoppage time in a 2-2 draw.”
In addition to the fines handed to Messi and Fray, MLS also announced that Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan’s red card from the game against Miami has been rescinded.
The decision came after Sullivan was shown a red card during the 2-2 draw, while MLS later reviewed the incident and rescinded the punishment.
In a separate incident, Minnesota United FC defender Anthony Markanich was also fined for embellishment during the second half of the game against Atlanta United on Wednesday.
The MLS disciplinary decisions therefore saw Messi, Fray and Markanich receive fines for separate incidents.
