United Airlines has announced plans to add 10 new international destinations and three additional overseas routes in 2027, with a map of the expansion showing a notable concentration in smaller European cities rather than major capitals. The new destinations include locations in Slovenia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Italy, alongside a new service to Okinawa, Japan.
The move stands in contrast to a difficult period for parts of the aviation industry. While several smaller airlines around the world have entered insolvency proceedings or ceased operating in 2026 , major network carriers have continued expanding long-haul international services and targeting routes they believe can attract higher-spending leisure travelers.
The expansion is one of the largest route announcements made by a U.S. airline this year and reflects a broader shift in airline strategy, with carriers increasingly looking beyond traditional tourism hubs in search of new markets.
Beginning in 2027, United plans to add the following 10 destinations. In a statement announcing the change, the airline said: “We will serve more destinations in Spain, Portugal, Italy and France than any other U.S. carrier.”
Eight of the routes will originate in Newark, New Jersey, while the remaining new services will operate from San Francisco and Washington Dulles.
The expansion comes at a mixed moment for the aviation industry. While some smaller carriers have struggled financially in 2026, major network airlines have continued investing in international routes. Rather than focusing solely on major European capitals, United's latest announcement targets destinations where nonstop service from the U.S. is limited, particularly San Francisco to Okinawa and Washington, D.C. to Toulouse where United is the only airline to fly non-stop from the U.S. to the location.
"We aim to have a destination on our route map for every traveler, at every stage of their lives. Whether it's a business trip, a dream honeymoon, a bucket-list adventure, or a trip home to see family, we're making the world feel smaller and connecting cultures at a scale no other airline in the world can match," said Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of Global Network Planning and Alliances, United. "We've added flights to nearly 60 new international cities in the last decade, building a global network with the breadth and reach to set travel trends and inspire even the most discerning travelers to discover somewhere new.”
Although international travel demand has remained strong on many long-haul routes, several smaller carriers have struggled with rising costs and competitive pressures.
Airlines in Europe, the United Kingdom and elsewhere have entered administration, liquidation or ceased operations during 2026. While in the U.S. Spirit Airlines shut down operations in May 2026 after failing to secure a bailout while in its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. The ultra-low-cost carrier canceled all flights and ceased operations after 34 years in business.
Alongside the 10 new destinations, United said it plans to add three new routes to cities already served by the airline, including Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan, Washington Dulles to Milan, Italy and Denver to Paris, France.
The airline also said it intends to resume service between San Francisco and Tel Aviv, a route that has been suspended since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.
