One of the Nittany Lions ' most important defensive players on their road to the 2024 CFP semifinals has found a new NFL home. Jaylen Reed , who was pivotal to perhaps the Nittany Lions ' best ever CFP-era performance, was traded from the Houston Texans to the New England Patriots . In return, the Texans will receive receiver Kayshon Boutte
This trade will give Reed an opportunity to play for one of the NFL's best defenses in the league. The Pats defense ranked fourth in scoring defense and eighth in yards per game allowed en route to a Super Bowl appearance. While the addition of Reed could be surplus to an already stellar unit, Reed's college years prove that he has what it takes to be a special player.
On a Tom Allen led defense, Jaylen Reed was actually the leading tackler with 98 and also had 6.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions. That earned him second team All-Big Ten honors, but not much recognition in the draft, where he was only selected in the sixth round by Houston. Still, Reed was able to appear in seven games, with one start, his rookie year before suffering an injury that saw him miss several weeks. He did end up contributing in the postseason, where he had five tackles.
Now, Reed only has a couple of days to prove that he can fit into the Patriots' equation on a roster that already feels more confident they can return to the Super Bowl. If he can somehow replicate what he showcased at a high level in college, then maybe the Patriots have found yet another hidden gem.
