Newcastle were thrashed 4-1 by Championship side Bristol City in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening and Howe was interviewed by the club’s official website in the aftermath.
He appeared surprisingly upbeat despite the heavy loss yet, on Thursday morning, news emerged that he would be leaving his job just weeks before the start of the new Premier League season.

— Newcastle United (@NUFC) July 29, 2026 The Englishman guided Newcastle to their first domestic trophy in 70 years when they won the Carabao Cup in 2025 but last season was a disappointment as they finished 12th and failed to secure European football, meaning Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have been sold this summer , while captain Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with Arsenal.
The 48-year-old had been bullish about the latest frustrating display in his post-Bristol City interview however.
“I thought it was a really good test for us,” explained Howe. “The scoreline’s a difficult one for us to take. I don’t think we deserved that at all today. I think anyone who watched the game would have seen that we were very competitive today. The goals we conceded were strange ones.
“The first one’s a long-range free kick. It was a good strike from their lad, I think it took a slight deflection on the way in. Second one, I think’s a foul on Sven [Botman]. Third one, we made a mistake and got counter-attacked on, and the fourth one’s an own goal. So, I think they’ve had six shots in the game, they’ve scored four goals.
“The majority of the game I think we had control of with the ball. We probably didn’t do enough with it in terms of creativity and chances, although we certainly should have scored more than the one we got.
“Ideally, you don’t want to lose. I mean, I’m not saying that we’re happy to lose – we’re not. We wanted to win the game. But you do want a test – you don’t want the games to be too easy.
“And we knew coming here with the squad that we have and the current state of their physical well-being, in terms of we haven’t trained for too long compared to a Championship team who no doubt will be a week to two weeks ahead of us. We knew it’d be very difficult.
“We felt we’d probably be strong enough to do better than we did in terms of scoreline. But I’m really pleased the players came through extended minutes. Fitness levels looked pretty good, and we’ll be better for the game.”
Newcastle fans reacted with bewilderment to Howe’s post-game proclamations, with one supporter opining on X/Twitter : “Never seen a bloke so far detached from reality. You said if you were no longer the man for the job you’d not outstay your welcome and you’d go. Well, your time’s up Eddie. Leave and give us half a chance to get someone in and have a decent season because with you that won’t happen.”
Another supporter expressed a similar sentiment, saying : “Don't know what game he was watching but we had no control over the ball. It's a bit off when the fans are shouting shoot every time we are near goal and for some reason 95 per cent of the players are scared to have a shot at goal. Relegation here we come.”
A third said: “Not sure he watched the same game as I did, time for a reality check”, while another was again left baffled by Howe’s analysis: “Has anyone ever wondered; how does a professional, full time Premier League manager seem to have the opposite opinion to every Newcastle fan for the vast majority of our performances when we lose? Crazy.”
Howe looks set to replaced in the Newcastle hotseat by little-known Matthias Jaissle, the 38-year-old German who had been coaching Saudi side Al Ahli.
