However, San Francisco could still use a legitimate starter at the position, which is why ESPN's Seth Walder recently put together a trade package between the 49ers and Atlanta Falcons that could take Raheem Morris' secondary to the next level.
In this deal, the 49ers receive safety Jessie Bates III and a 2028 sixth-round pick for a 2027 third-round selection.
Bates played collegiately at Wake Forest from 2015-17, earning All-ACC honors once before the Cincinnati Bengals took him in the second round (No. 54 overall) of the 2018 NFL draft. After five years and one All-Pro selection in Cincinnati, he signed a four-year, $64.02 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. He's earned two more All-Pro selections and made one Pro Bowl in his three seasons in Atlanta.
In 130 games over eight years in the NFL, Bates has recorded 811 tackles, 70 passes defensed, 27 interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a sack.
Starting safety Malik Mustapha has been battling a hamstring injury early in training camp, and he was already fighting 2025 fifth-round pick Marques Sigle for snaps before he went down, so it's clear that Bates would be welcomed addition to the unit.
Plus, it doesn't hurt that he's played for Morris for the last three years in Atlanta.
