The Buccaneers received welcome news about young star Emeka Egbuka, who injured his foot during joint practice with the New York Jets this week.
Per the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud, Egbuka met with specialists and got diagnosed with a stable toe sprain that should not put his season-opener status in jeopardy.
Bucs WE Emeka Egbuka underwent more testing today with a specialist and it was confirmed he has a sprain but it’s stable. Bucs are very optimistic that he will be ready for Week 1.

This news will bring a huge sigh of relief for everyone, as a turf toe diagnosis — a notoriously persistent injury — could’ve potential derailed the ascending 23-year-old’s entire sophomore campaign. Egbuka suffered the injury Wednesday after getting rolled up on after an end-around attempt, and he was limping heavily afterward.
Egbuka is expected to get heavy looks as the team’s No. 1 receiver (or at least a 1a-1b situation with Chris Godwin) after the departure of Mike Evans, so hopefully he’ll be fully healed to assume that responsibility.
