The New Orleans Saints entered Saturday's preseason matchup with the Los Angeles Rams looking for more clarity in their backup quarterback competition. Instead, both Zach Wilson and Spencer Rattler made costly mistakes.
Wilson got the start with Tyler Shough and many of the Saints' other starters sitting after two joint practices with Los Angeles. After an impressive preseason debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars , Wilson wasn't able to carry that momentum into his second appearance. He completed 6-of-12 passes for 55 yards and an interception in the first half as New Orleans entered halftime trailing 20-0. Wilson's interception came after he attempted to push the ball downfield, giving him his first turnover of the preseason.

With the Saints threatening to score in the red zone, Rattler's pass was intercepted in the end zone by Alex Cook and returned 100 yards for a touchdown. It was an especially damaging swing considering New Orleans was positioned to finally put points on the board.
The two turnovers come at an important point in the competition between the two QBs vying for the QB2 job behind Shough. Wilson entered Saturday with some momentum after an impressive first preseason game, but that momentum appears to have been lost after a shaky start.
Head coach Kellen Moore said entering Saturday's game that both QBs had been playing well as the Saints continued evaluating the position. There's still time left before New Orleans has to settle on its initial 53-man roster — and its QB2 situation — but Saturday's turnovers add another wrinkle to a backup quarterback battle that remains unsettled.
