Celtic-linked Haissem Hassan has been omitted from Real Oviedo’s squad for their latest pre-season outing, adding further intrigue to speculation surrounding his future.
The winger, who has been linked with a move to Celtic, will not travel with the Spanish side for Saturday’s friendly against German outfit Nurnberg after being left out of the 26-player group.
Hassan has only recently returned to Oviedo following an extended summer break after representing Egypt at the World Cup. Since rejoining the club, the 24-year-old has been working away from the main group as he builds up his fitness.
His displays in the tournament, particularly an eye-catching showing against Argentina in the last 16, significantly raised his profile and attracted interest from a number of clubs. Celtic, however, are understood to have been monitoring the attacker before his performances on the international stage.
Martin O’Neill is keen to strengthen his options out wide following Daizen Maeda’s departure, with Hassan emerging as one of the club’s leading attacking targets.
A naturally left-footed right winger, Hassan endured a difficult campaign as Oviedo suffered relegation from La Liga. He failed to find the net in 38 appearances last season, contributing three assists after registering four goals during the club’s successful promotion campaign the previous year.
Despite those modest numbers, there is precedent for players reviving their careers at Celtic, with both Nicolas Kuhn and Jota arriving in Glasgow after underwhelming spells elsewhere before significantly increasing their market value.
Born in France, Hassan progressed through the country’s youth international ranks during his time at Chateauroux before later opting to represent Egypt at senior level.
Celtic have also been credited with an interest in Hassan’s Egypt teammate Emam Ashour, the Al Ahly midfielder who scored twice during the World Cup.
