The Toronto Maple Leafs have already had a busy offseason, with new general manager John Chayka taking an aggressive approach to building a win-now team.
Toronto added Sergei Bobrovsky, brought more size and versatility to its bottom six, made changes on defense, and won the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, selecting Gavin McKenna.
Now, the Maple Leafs have been linked to another surprising move that could add some pedigree to the roster.
Maple Leafs Linked With Surprise All-Star Move
The speculation surrounding a potential Erik Karlsson trade to the Maple Leafs is largely tied to his contract situation.
Karlsson is entering the final year of his eight-year, $92 million contract, which carries an $11.5 million annual cap hit. Since he is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, Pittsburgh must decide whether to extend him, keep him for the season or trade him before potentially losing him for nothing.
A long-term extension appears unlikely. The Penguins are trying to get younger while remaining competitive, making a major commitment to a 36-year-old defenseman a difficult fit for their long-term plans.
That has led to speculation about where Karlsson could end up.
NHL insider Jimmy Murphy recently suggested that the Ottawa Senators and Maple Leafs could be two teams to watch. “IMHO, Erik Karlsson to the #GoSensGo or #LeafsForever before the 2026-27 season starts,” he said.
A move to Toronto would certainly be a surprising one, but Karlsson could still fill an important need for the Maple Leafs.
Karlsson Could Help Toronto’s Blue Line
Elite right-shot defensemen are among the most difficult players to acquire in the NHL. Karlsson would immediately give Toronto a dynamic puck-moving presence on the right side of its defense.
Even at 36, he remains one of the league’s best passers and puck transporters. His ability to move the puck quickly and make clean zone exits could help Toronto avoid extended pressure in its own end and get the puck into the hands of its talented forwards.
Karlsson could also provide another dangerous option on the power play.
The biggest obstacle would be his contract.
Karlsson carries an $11.5 million cap hit in the final year of his deal. However, San Jose is already retaining $1.5 million annually, meaning Pittsburgh’s current share is $10 million.
If Pittsburgh retains another 50%, Karlsson’s cap hit would drop to $5 million for the acquiring team, making him more affordable for Toronto. However, the Penguins would likely want a stronger return in draft picks or players for retaining salary.

Still, a one-year rental could make sense for the Maple Leafs. If Pittsburgh prefers trading Karlsson over losing him for nothing next summer, Toronto could become a realistic landing spot with enough salary retention.
