The tennis star’s injury raises concerns about his ability to defend his US Open title this year

The Spanish tennis star, 23, withdrew from the Cincinnati Open on Tuesday, Aug. 4 as he continues to heal from the wrist injury he sustained during the Barcelona Open in April, which caused him to miss the French Open and Wimbledon.
“We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible,” tournament director Bob Moran said in a statement on Tuesday. “We wish him the best with his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to Cincinnati in the future.”

Alcaraz is the reigning champion of the Cincinnati Open, defeating his frequent opponent Jannik Sinner last year. Concern over his ability to defend his title at the US Open continues to increase as he recovers from his injury.
Recent footage of the seven-time Grand Slam champion shows him playing near full strength, which led to speculation that he could make his return at the Cincinnati tournament that begins on Aug. 11.
The main draw of the US Open begins Aug. 30. Alcaraz, who stands at No. 2 in the world behind Sinner, is on the entry list but hasn’t yet confirmed his participation in the New York City tournament.

Alcaraz last played at the Barcelona Open in April before taking a break due to injury. He announced that the ailment would keep him out of competition through the end of the clay-court season , and then through Wimbledon.
“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros as we wait to evaluate the progress so we can decide when to return to the court,” the tennis star wrote in a post on April 24.
He added, “This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of it stronger.”

Amid his recovery journey, Alcaraz has been having fun with his style game.
The Spaniard debuted a bold hair transformation on July 30, featuring a major switch-up from the long, shaggy look that he rocked previously. He opted for a full head of braids woven intricately into tight rows, to mixed reviews from fans.

That’s not unusual for the Spaniard, who shocked fans with his clean-shaven hair last US Open — which he said was his brother’s mistake.
“My brother misunderstood with the machine he cut it,” he told reporters after his straight sets win. “And the only way to fix it is to shave it off.”
