Colorado offensive coordinator Brennan Marion revealed Thursday that Julian Lewis will be the Buffaloes' starting quarterback in Week 1 against Georgia Tech, a notable revelation, but an expected one.
Lewis, a redshirt freshman, is one of the top quarterbacks in his class and was recognized this week by being named to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.
The award is given annually to the nation's top freshman player, whether on offense or defense. Lewis was one of 37 players named to the watchlist, which will be trimmed to 14 players in early November, with finalists unveiled in December.
Recent winners include Ohio State's Julian Sayin (2025), Texas' Colin Simmons (2024) and North Carolina's Drake Maye (2022).

Receivers and running backs are reliant on other players for success, and defensive players, especially freshmen, are usually rotated. If Lewis has a season like he is capable of, he should be a strong contender for the award.
The former five-star prospect is coming off a true freshman season where he started two games and finished the year completing 52-of-94 passes for 589 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions.
Lewis begins his quest for the award on Sept. 3 in Atlanta against Georgia Tech, which will be a bit of a homecoming for the Georgia native.
