Why an Alex Highsmith trade could fuel Pittsburgh's future QB search
As Pittsburgh Steelers training camp opens, edge-rusher depth stands out as one of the roster's definitive core strengths. With superstar T.J. Watt anchoring the defensive front alongside rising pass rusher Nick Herbig, Alex Highsmith forms part of a dynamic rotational trio. However, if the season takes a disastrous turn, Highsmith could quickly emerge as general manager Omar Khan’s most lucrative trade asset before the deadline.
Trading a productive edge rusher in his prime is certainly not a move the organization would consider under normal circumstances, said Christopher Carter on his “ Locked on Steelers ” podcast. Yet, in an emergency scenario where Pittsburgh's season unravels early, Highsmith’s age, contract situation, and proven track record make him an ideal candidate to net massive draft capital for a franchise rebuild.
“Now, Broderick Jones is one name on this list that might not attract a bigger hall, but one guy that we've talked about a lot would be Alex Highsmith.”
Unlike developmental prospects or fringe rotational contributors, Highsmith carries elite market value across the league. Contenders seeking immediate defensive help would willingly package top-tier draft capital to acquire an established pass rusher capable of stepping straight into a championship push.
“A pass rusher in his late 20s that was respected around the NFL, developed, can plug and play with a contender. That would make a lot of sense, and he would be the top guy,” added Carter.
While fans fully expect Pittsburgh to remain competitive in the AFC North, an unexpected mid-season slump could force Khan to evaluate the franchise's long-term trajectory.
“Let's say they're 1-7 through eight games and the trade deadline's right there in front of you and someone's willing to give you a really good pick for Alex Highsmith and you're like, you know what, he only has one more year left on his deal. We've got to rebuild. We've got to stack up value.”
If the front office decides to stack premium draft capital for a future quarterback pursuit, moving Highsmith becomes a realistic, forward-looking strategic move.
