Hulu's new psychological thriller Furious puts a fresh spin on the crime genre, pairing an FBI agent and a serial killer in a tense cat-and-mouse game where the lines between hunter and hunted begin to disappear.
Entertainment reporter Joelle Garguilo sat down with the cast and creator to talk about the dark, twisty series.
"An FBI agent, a serial killer, and a cat-and-mouse game where the lines don't just blur, they disappear," is how the new Hulu thriller is introduced.
The series stars Emmy Rossum and Lola Petticrew, whose characters' lives increasingly parallel and intertwine throughout the story.
"The mental Olympics, twists and turns," Garguilo said of the series.
"I'm so proud of it, and I'm so proud of everyone who worked on it," Petticrew said.
Garguilo noted that Petticrew's character is "very layered, troubled" and "difficult" to play.
"I was very lucky that when I signed on, Liz's material is so strong, and there's already so much there," Petticrew said.
Rossum said she found herself sympathizing with her character in unexpected ways.
"I found myself, when I was reading the scripts, ultimately, when we were in post on the show, being like, 'Am I identifying with the serial killer? Do I hope she pulls this off?'" Rossum said.
The show also stars Scoot McNairy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Jake Lacy.
"I don't know about you guys, but I would be reading it like, 'What is going to happen?'" Bernstine said. "Waiting with bated breath for Liz to give us the next episode."
When asked when the cast figured out the ending, the group laughed and agreed it was only at the very end.
"Close. Yeah. Yeah. At the end," the cast responded. "Until someone told us. The end. Yeah. Yeah."
Even creator Elizabeth Meriwether said she kept herself guessing throughout the writing process.
"No," Meriwether said when asked if she knew the ending from the start. "I kind of tried to keep myself surprised."
Rossum also discussed the preparation required for her role, including firearms and tactical training.
"First, I wanted to understand the psychology of the job, and then I wanted to train myself so that the weapon would be part of my body, so that I could understand what it's like to move through a crime scene, to be in a gun battle," Rossum said. "So I got to do simulations of all those things at West Point in Texas."
She recalled one particularly intense training exercise.
"On the second day, there was a person that I didn't know would be part of the drill who was shooting at me," Rossum said. "I was like, 'I can't. I was like, I have trauma-complex PTSD. I can't do this.' But, yeah, I really realized that what they have is very unique and very special."
As for what audiences can expect, Rossum described the series as "a twisty, twisted crime thriller."
"I don't think it is a show that you have seen before," McNairy added.
Rossum said the series focuses less on traditional villains and more on the women at its center.
"It's more about the women at the center of it than it is about the bad guys," she said.
And Meriwether offered one final warning for viewers:
"Don't get comfortable. It's going to surprise you," she said. "So stay on the edge of your seat."
"Furious" is streaming now on Hulu and Disney+.
