Rockies vs. Padres: Probable Starters, Game Times, Etc.
There's no doubt that the 2026 season hasn't always been too friendly to the Colorado Rockies. But entering this season, there were expectations of success around the San Diego Padres .
Unfortunately for Padres fans, they've watched their team deal with injuries and some levels of underperformance. That doesn't sit well with the Padres' faithful who come out all the time and support their team at Petco Park.
The Padres are 53-53 this season, but 14 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West Division. And for the Rockies, they are 42-65 and three games behind the fourth-place San Francisco Giants .
Sure, the Padres are at .500, which is still good. Yet there were some expectations that San Diego would be a strong competitor against the Dodgers for the division lead. Obviously, that has not materialized. Now, the Padres are keeping their eyes on an NL Wild Card spot.
Starting on Tuesday night and wrapping up on Wednesday afternoon, the Rockies and Padres are going to have a short, quick, two-game series at Petco Park in San Diego.
Rockies vs. Padres: Probable starters
Let's take a look at the probable starting pitchers for the Rockies and Padres.
Tuesday, July 28: RHP Michael Lorenzen (3-9, 6.53) vs. RHP Michael King (6-7,3.24)
Well, Michael Lorenzen gets another chance to show what he can do. This just might be his final start in a Rockies uniform, too. Colorado might use this game as a showcase for Lorenzen to show other MLB clubs his array of pitches. That 3-9 record and 6.53 ERA are not impressive at all, but a couple of MLB clubs might be willing to take him on as a reclamation project.
Michael King has been better than Lorenzen for the Padres. That's not saying much, but a 6-7 record and a nice 3.24 ERA might look good to the Rockies if King was available for a trade with San Diego. No dice, though. It appears that King might be safe from getting traded. If the Padres do ship him out, then don't expect to see him dealt to an intra-division team.
Wednesday, July 29: RHP Gabriel Hughes (0-2, 2.79) vs. TBD
Since the Padres do not have a starting pitcher named for Wednesday's finale, let's focus on Rockies youngster Gabriel Hughes.
Right now, Hughes is 0-2 with a 2.79 ERA. His record isn't impressive, of course, but that ERA should let people know that he's been pitching pretty well. This Wednesday afternoon showdown is an opportunity for Hughes to show what he can bring on the mound against the Padres.
Game Times/TV/Radio
Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. MT. Wednesday's afternoon game is reportedly due to start at 2:10 p.m. MT.
Both of these games will be shown on Rockies.TV.
