ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joc Pederson homered twice to drive in four runs and Ezequiel Duran and Jake Burger also went deep for the Texas Rangers in a 7-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday. They took three of four in the series to stretch their AL West lead to 2 1/2 games.
All four homers came in the first three innings off George Kirby (8-9). The right-hander had been 9-1 with a 1.33 ERA in his previous 13 career starts against the Rangers.
Texas righty Kumar Rocker (4-8) struck out seven while allowing two runs over 6 2/3 innings. He had thrown one-hit ball over six scoreless innings six days earlier in a win against the Chicago White Sox.
The Rangers (54-52), the only AL West team with a winning record, had a half-game lead over the Mariners before winning the first two games of the series. Seattle (52-55) won 6-4 Sunday , when Texas lost for the first time this season when leading after six innings.
ORIOLES 8, TIGERS 5
DETROIT (AP) — Jackson Holliday had four hits and Baltimore hit three home runs in a win against Detroit.
The Orioles had gone nine straight games without a multi-homer game. But, against the Tigers, Baltimore went deep twice in the fifth and once in the sixth and scored in five of the first six innings.
Detroit lost its third straight game, falling to 50-57 and facing tough decisions heading into the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Grant Wolfram (3-2) picked up the win in relief and Rico Garcia pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
PIRATES 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2, 10 INNINGS
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Brandon Lowe singled home Billy Cook in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally Pittsburgh to a win over Arizona.
Lowe finished a three-hit night by lacing a line drive off Diamondbacks reliever Taylor Clarke (2-2) that smacked off the glove of Arizona first baseman Ildemaro Vargas and rolled away, allowing Cook to race home as the Pirates pulled even with the Diamondbacks for the National League’s third wild-card spot.
Mason Montgomery (4-3) worked around an error by third baseman Nick Gonzales and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th to earn the victory. The Pirates’ bullpen, which has been a sore spot much of the season, tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings.
Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller had his second straight solid start coming out of the All-Star break, giving up two runs in 5 1/3 innings, his only real mistake coming in the sixth when three singles loaded the bases, and Max Kepler followed with a rope to the corner in right that gave the Diamondbacks the lead.
MARLINS 8, PHILLIES 7
MIAMI (AP) — Griffin Conine hit a walkoff run-scoring single to lift the Marlins past Philadelphia and end Miami’s franchise record 12-game losing streak.
Phillies closer Jhoan Duran (1-4) entered with a 7-5 lead before loading the bases with no outs and allowing a tying two-run single by Heriberto Hernández, who scored the winning run.
Hernández and Conine homered against Phillies ace Zack Wheeler. Jakob Marsee had a run-scoring double and Otto Lopez added an RBI triple for the Marlins, who hadn’t won a game since July 9. The Phillies have struggled since the All-Star break, losing seven of 10.
Phillips allowed three hits and two runs while walking two and striking out five. He was lifted after five innings and 76 pitches. Calvin Faucher (5-5) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.
BLUE JAYS 3, NATIONALS 2
WASHINGTON (AP) — Luis Urías homered, Myles Straw had a double and a run-scoring single, and Toronto celebrated Max Scherzer’s return to Washington with a win over the Nationals.
Scherzer came off the injured list to start on his 42nd birthday. In his first appearance since June 10, he gave up a run on four hits over 2 2/3 innings, throwing 75 pitches.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner’s night ended after he struck out Daylen Lile to end a 12-pitch at-bat and looked to the Toronto bench.
Scherzer, who spent about 6 1/2 seasons with the Nationals and helped them win the 2019 World Series, left to a standing ovation and waved as he neared the Blue Jays dugout after his 100th career start at Nationals Park.
Mason Fluharty (5-1) got the win as six Toronto relievers combined to allow one run in 6 1/3 innings. Louis Varland pitched the ninth for his 22 save, giving up a two-out single and a walk before striking out Luis García Jr.
The Blue Jays had lost seven of 10 since the All-Star break.
METS 14, BRAVES 3
NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor homered twice and tripled off the top of the fence, driving in six runs as New York pulled away for a victory over Atlanta.
Marcus Semien hit a long two-run homer that snapped a 3-all tie in the sixth inning. Tyrone Taylor extended his tear at the plate with a three-run drive in the seventh as the last-place Mets (45-62) matched a season high with 19 hits and hammered a first-place opponent for the second consecutive day.
Taylor and Semien each had a three-run homer Sunday, when New York beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3.
Lindor, Semien, Taylor, Bo Bichette and rookie A.J. Ewing all had three hits as the Mets, minus injured slugger Juan Soto, scored double-digit runs for the 10th time this season.
Rookie starter Zac Thornton (2-1) allowed three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked one in his fifth big league outing.
