The Celtics have called TD Garden their home for the last 31 years, but the team does not own the arena, which has brought up discussions in recent years of whether or not the team should build its own venue.
In a recent radio show appearance, Celtics owner Bill Chisholm talked about this topic and described a situation where he might see it as necessary for the team to get its own arena.

On The Greg Hill Show , Chisholm was asked about his thoughts on whether the team needs its own arena to "compete financially."

"No, but I do think we need to have an arena that is consistent with the quality and excellence of the Celtics. We need to create the best fan and player experience we can. Do we need to own the building to do that? No...If we need to own the building to do it, we'll do that," Chisholm said.
"When you do that, you've got to make sure that you're not losing focus on what matters. You're not in the business of running an arena; you're in the business of running a world-class basketball team that's putting up banners," Chisholm said.
He continued to talk about the value of winning and that being at the forefront of his decisions.

From what he said, for now, the Celtics will likely remain playing in TD Garden, but it's interesting to hear that the needle mover for getting a new arena would be if they felt a new one would elevate the experience fans and players get, and that it would be better than what TD Garden provides.
Those who have been to TD Garden have experienced how special it is firsthand, especially once the playoffs come around, and opposing players have even praised the team for the venue they have.
