The time has come again to vote for The Star Press East Central Indiana high school Athlete of the Week, brought to you by IU Health.
The reigning Athlete of the Week is Blackford volleyball freshman Kendyl Walls. Walls' impressive debut season continued with four digs, two assists, an ace, and 37 receptions with only one error in the Bruins' CIC conference opener, a five-set win over Frankton on Thursday, Aug. 20. She also posted a team-high 12 digs in a sweep loss to South Adams on Monday, Aug. 17. Walls received 5,105 out of 6,197 votes cast last week (82.4%).
This week's poll brings us 10 more nominees who had standout performances during the week of Aug. 24-29. To submit nominees for future polls, please email their names and any notable statistics/accomplishments for the week to [email protected] by Sunday of that week.
The poll will remain open until Friday, Sept. 4, at noon ET. You may vote as many times as you'd like — simply refresh the page after your vote is submitted. Please vote using the poll found by scrolling to the bottom of this page — votes submitted via email will not be counted.
Here's a quick look at this week's nominees:
JaMaria Jackson, Muncie Burris volleyball: Jackson led the Owls to a 3-0 week with sweeps of Frankton, Alexandria-Monroe, and Cowan. She logged 16 kills in a win over Frankton on Monday, Aug. 24, then followed that up with 17 kills and a block against Alexandria on Tuesday, Aug. 25. She capped off her week with 19 kills in a win over Cowan on Thursday, Aug. 27.
Lilly Duncan, Yorktown girls golf: Duncan won a second-consecutive low medalist title at the Delaware County Girls Golf Tournament with a 9-hole score of 37 at Muncie Elks on Wednesday, Aug. 26. She helped Yorktown win a second-straight county title with a team score of 163.
Jaxson DeHoff, Jay County boys soccer: DeHoff scored Jay County's lone goal to lift the Patriots to a 1-0 victory over Delta on Thursday, Aug. 27. He also logged an assist in the team's 5-0 win over New Castle on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Lexi Taylor, Wapahani girls golf: Taylor tied for low medalist honors at the Mid-Eastern Conference Girls Golf Championship with a score of 81 at Cardinal Hills on Saturday, Aug. 29. She was also named all-county after a 9-hole score of 40 in the Delaware County Girls Golf Tournament at Muncie Elks on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Aberee Ervin, Monroe Central girls golf: Ervin shot an 83 — including a hole-in-one on hole 9 — at Cardinal Hills to help Monroe Central claim the Mid-Eastern Conference Championship for the first time in school history on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Auden Hummel, Winchester Community volleyball: Hummel was named Tournament MVP at the Cowan Invitational after helping the Golden Falcons go 4-0 with two-set victories over Frankton, Cambridge City Lincoln, Elwood and Southern Wells. Hummel logged 36 kills, 16 digs, five blocks and four aces across Winchester's four victories.
Blake Haines, Blue River Valley boys cross country: Haines finished in first place out of 76 runners with a personal-best time of 17:01.45 in the boys 5K race at the Wapahani Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Colin Elam, Daleville boys cross country: Elam finished second place out of 76 runners with a time of 17:06.03 in the boys 5K race at the Wapahani Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 29. He led Daleville to a third-place team finish.
William Tyler, Muncie Central boys cross country: Tyler finished sixth out of 76 runners with a time of 18:06.71 in the boys 5K race at the Wapahani Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 29, leading the Bearcats to a first-place team finish.
Jed Vanator, Delta boys soccer: Vanator scored four goals in Delta's 5-1 victory over Mississinewa on Saturday, Aug. 29.
