Wheelchair basketball coach Soltani pleased with Turkey camp
TEHRAN - Iran national wheelchair basketball team head coach Behrouz Soltani expressed satisfaction with his team’s preparations in Turkey, saying the squad followed their plans and are now ready to begin their campaign at the Ottawa 2026 IWBF World Championships.
The Iranian national wheelchair basketball team, preparing for the upcoming World Championship, held a training camp in Turkey and played six friendly matches against Turkey and Poland. Iran recorded four wins and two defeats during the camp.
Soltani said the camp and the friendly matches had significantly contributed to the team’s preparations and helped the coaching staff gain a deeper understanding of the players and the team’s overall condition ahead of the 2026 IWBF World Championships.
“Turkey, as the hosts, and Poland were our opponents in the tournament. We played three matches against each team. We defeated Poland in all three games, while we beat Turkey once,” Soltani said.
“However, the main objective of the camp and these matches was not the results. We wanted to improve our preparations for the World Championship, and we achieved that very well.”
The head coach added that his players’ performances in Turkey had increased his confidence ahead of the tournament.
“Based on what I saw from the players in Turkey, I am more hopeful that we can reach an ideal level for the World Championship,” he said.
The World Championship will also determine the continental qualification berths for the Paralympics qualifying tournament. Soltani stressed that Iran will be targeting positive results while also using the competition as an important step toward the Asian Para Games.
Iran’s next training camp will begin in Tehran on Sept. 6 and continue without interruption until the team’s departure for Canada.
Regarding Iran’s opponents, Soltani said his team have been drawn into Group D alongside Morocco, Germany and Canada.
“Our opponents are currently playing preparation tournaments. We monitor their situation on a daily basis because, if we want to achieve our desired result at the World Championship, we must get positive results from the group stage,” he said.
Soltani also confirmed that Iran’s 12-player squad for the World Championship has already been finalized and expressed hope that preparations would continue according to plan until the team travel to Canada and the tournament officially begins.
The Ottawa 2026 IWBF World Championships will be held from Sept. 9 to 19.
