Joyner, 25, spent last summer with the Las Vegas Raiders before playing for the UFL’s Houston Gamblers this season. The workout allows Philadelphia to evaluate a young defender with experience in an NFL training camp and additional professional snaps from the spring.
The Eagles have invested heavily in their defensive line, but the outside linebacker rotation remains a developing part of Vic Fangio’s defense. Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt return as the primary young options, while A.J. Epenesa and Arnold Ebiketie were added during the offseason.
Jonathan Greenard is expected to play a significant role once healthy. The veteran began camp on the physically unable to perform list after suffering a pectoral strain while lifting weights before players reported. Although the injury is not considered long-term, every missed practice creates additional opportunities for other edge defenders.
A tryout does not guarantee Joyner a contract. Philadelphia regularly evaluates available players throughout the summer, allowing the front office to update its emergency lists while identifying potential additions. General manager Howie Roseman has repeatedly said the roster remains a work in progress throughout camp and the regular season.
Joyner would have to prove he can contribute beyond rushing the passer if signed. Reserve edge defenders are often asked to set the edge against the run, occasionally drop into coverage and handle significant special-teams responsibilities.
The Eagles do not need to make a move simply because they hosted Joyner. The workout does, however, reinforce their commitment to searching for competition and depth at a premium position. If Joyner impressed the coaching and personnel staffs, his UFL performance could lead to another NFL opportunity.
