Appearing on the “JD Bunkis Podcast,” McKenna reflected on his first experience with Toronto during the World Cup festivities. “I got a little taste of what it’s like there, what the city’s like, what the people are like, and the fans and stuff,” he said. “When I was there, it was awesome.”

The 18-year-old admitted the summer has been demanding but rewarding. “I’m very grateful for all these opportunities that I’ve been getting,” McKenna said. “Not a lot of kids would be able to say they’re having the summer that I’m having.”
Toronto’s passionate fan base also left an early impression.
“The fans, they were approaching me, and they were all awesome about it,” McKenna said. “There’s a buzz around the city. They’re excited for next year and the Leafs, and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

McKenna’s excitement matches the organization’s expectations. The Maple Leafs won the 2026 Draft Lottery despite only 8.5 percent odds and selected the Penn State star first overall after he recorded 51 points in 35 NCAA games.

Ludwig-Imagn Images Earlier this summer, McKenna outlined his goal during an appearance on SportsCenter . “I think I’m a player who makes all the players around me better,” he said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to win a Stanley Cup. That’s all I want, to win a Stanley Cup in Toronto.”
Those comments reflect confidence without ignoring the challenge ahead. Toronto finished last in the Atlantic Division after a disappointing 2025-26 season and responded with major front-office and roster changes. General manager John Chayka added veterans while keeping Auston Matthews and William Nylander as the team’s foundation.
McKenna is expected to play meaningful minutes immediately, possibly alongside Matthews. His playmaking ability and maturity should strengthen Toronto’s top six from opening night.
