Defense has been the identity of the Philadelphia Eagles over the last few seasons under Super Bowl-winning coordinator Vic Fangio.
The team boasts elite playmakers across the front seven and secondary, seemingly developing a new NFL star every year — from Zack Baun and Jalen Carter to Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell.
But Eagles fans got some bad news Tuesday, as Fangio revealed that two key members of that defense will miss time due to injury. According to Fangio , edge rusher Jonathan Greenard is expected to miss "at least a few more weeks," while veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones will "miss some time." No firm timetable has been given for either, but with Philadelphia opening its preseason Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens, both players appear likely to miss that game — and potentially more.

Greenard was one of the Eagles' biggest offseason acquisitions, acquired via trade in April before signing a four-year, $100 million extension. He suffered a pectoral strain ahead of training camp in July and was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. There's still a month before the regular season begins, but if Greenard isn't activated off PUP by the final roster cutdown at the end of August, he'll move to Reserve/PUP and be forced to sit out at least the first four games of the regular season.
As for Jones, he signed a one-year, $2 million deal with Philadelphia in March and was expected to serve a valuable depth role behind starting cornerbacks Mitchell and Riq Woolen. A two-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, Jones brings a steady veteran presence to an otherwise young secondary, and any extended absence would be less than ideal.
There's still plenty of time before Week 1, but both injuries add pressure to the defense — and if either lingers into the regular season, Philadelphia could have a real problem on its hands.
