The Detroit Lions have some reshuffling to do in their quarterback room after one of their veterans surprisingly announced his retirement.
Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who was set to be Detroit's backup, has informed the team that he is planning to step away from the team and retire, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport .
This isn't the first time Bridgewater has caught the Lions by surprise. He announced his plans to retire from the NFL following the conclusion of the 2023 season and went on to become a high school football coach.
However, Bridgewater ultimately returned to the NFL, spending the 2024 season with the Lions and 2025 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell hinted Bridgewater's decision to hang up his cleats will be for good this time, though.
"Teddy Bridgewater is going to step away. I've known Teddy a long time, and man, the human being is unbelievable, certainly the player. Everything that he's about, the type of teammate he is, the play he prepares, always played the game up here and had a huge heart, he's going to be missed," Campbell said . "His time being with us meant a lot and it meant a lot to our guys."
Bridgewater began his professional career as the No. 32 overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. But he never lived up to those expectations, throwing for just 6,150 yards, 28 touchdowns and 22 interceptions from 2014-17.
He was never able to truly find his footing again, also spending time with the New York Jets (2018), New Orleans Saints (2018-19), Carolina Panthers (2020), Denver Broncos (2021) and Miami Dolphins (2022).
Bridgewater finishes his NFL career with 15,182 passing yards, 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.
