The 27-year-old suffered a major setback when the Titans drafted Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick last year, and Levis himself missed the entire year after having season-ending shoulder surgery.
The Titans made things even harder on Levis by signing Mitchell Trubisky to compete for the backup spot this offseason. Despite the adversity he’s faced, Levis still believes a starting job is in his future.
“I know I've put the tape out there already that I'm a dang good quarterback in this league and I'm even better than I ever have been,” Levis said. “There are not 32 quarterbacks in this league better than me — I know that for sure.”
Through two preseason games, Levis hasn’t done anything to back up his bold claim. He’s completed just 7 of 17 passes for 57 yards, and with roster cuts around the corner, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport believes Levis could be looking for a new team soon.
“The Kentucky product may soon be out of Nashville altogether,” Davenport wrote . “… Levis may not be lacking in confidence, but his performance tells another story. In those 21 starts, he threw just 21 touchdown passes. His passer rating barely cracked 80, and he committed multiple turnovers.
“Ward is the unquestioned starter in Tennessee, while Mitchell Trubisky is a veteran backup with nine seasons and 57 starts under his belt. Levis faces a difficult path to a roster spot.”
In two seasons with the Titans, Levis has thrown for 3,899 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions with an 82.7 passer rating.
If Levis is released, several teams could look at him in a backup role including the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, who need to replace the player who backed up Levis in Tennessee, Malik Willis, and the Washington Commanders, who could use another QB with Marcus Mariota nursing an MCL sprain.
