The two stars of the Hall of Fame Game back on Aug. 6 were undoubtedly the two rookie quarterbacks: the Carolina Panthers' Haynes King and the Arizona Cardinals ' Carson Beck.
Beck in particular caught the eye, going 15-19 for 188 passing yards and a touchdown, garnering him a 125.4 passer rating on the game.
Howver, in the second game of the pre-season on Thursday, Beck will be out-of-commission with a rib injury, per Ian Rapoport.
"AZCardinals QB Carson Beck won’t play in tonight’s preseason game against the Raiders due to a rib injury sustained in last Thursday’s Hall of Fame game. The injury is not considered serious. Beck practiced through soreness all week but the team decided to keep him out tonight as a precaution and to allow more time to heal." Rapoport posted on X on Aug.13.
Although the franchise had announced days before that QB1 Jacoby Brissett would start the game on Thursday, it was likely that Beck would emerge at some point in the second quarter and get more valuable playing-time reps.
Beck is in a slightly unusual spot as a rookie; as an early third rounder he is not automatically viewed as the immediate future of the franchise in the post-Kyler Murray era. But Brissett is not on a long-term deal, having signed a re-worked one-year, $15.5 million deal last month, opening the door for Beck at the very least in the years to come.
Whilst statistically Brissett looked good on paper after coming in for Murray just a month into the season; he passed for 3,336 yards, 23 touchdowns and 8 picks for a more than respectable 94.1 passer rating; the team went 1-11 during his starting tenure.
A further losing stretch could see new head coach Mike LaFleur pivot to Beck – especially if the 24 year old continues to impress post-rib injury.
