An opening series loss to the Dodgers has been mitigated by series wins against the Pirates and Phillies, and now a full week in Chicago is on deck as the Trade Deadline approaches. Now is crunch time for teams determining if they’re going to be buyers or sellers, and that means the Yankees may finally make some deals that they’ve been rumored to be interested in. It also means that the pressure is on to secure the players that can take this team from in the running to true contender status in a field that has lacked a clear frontrunner, as everyone else scrambles to find their missing pieces.
For the Yankees specifically, their deadline became further murkier with the news that Cody Bellinger was placed on the IL after tweaking his hamstring at the tail-end of Saturday’s game in Philadelphia. Now without two-thirds of their starting outfield, even if for a brief spell, the team will surely have to consider getting a stopgap solution in left or allow Spencer Jones and Jasson Domínguez to be their corner outfielders until the reinforcements arrive. Is there a fitting low-cost replacement they should go for, or will the youth have to hold the line? How does that impact their willingness to include either player in trade discussions for other pieces?
