See the full story · 1 sourcesThe Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition is expected to continue as training camp begins this week. While there is still some optimism from some that J.J. McCarthy can win the job, the overwhelming belief is that Kyler Murray will be the team's Week 1 starter.
Murray, signed in March to a one-year, $1.3 million deal, is entering a pivotal season in his career. After having made two Pro Bowls in his first three seasons, he has struggled to stay healthy over the past four years, missing 27 games in that span.
Still, the expectation is that he can provide more consistency and stability at quarterback after the Vikings ranked 29th in passing yards in 2025. McCarthy struggled in ten starts, completing 57.6% of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
That means Murray doesn't have to be a game-changing presence to help Minnesota's offense improve this season. Because of that, SI 's Matt Verderame ranking Murray as the league's 21st-best quarterback shouldn't be overly concerning.
At 28 years old, Murray is changing teams for the first time after being released by the Cardinals this offseason and now finds himself with a quarterback guru, coach Kevin O’Connell, and future Hall of Fame receiver, Justin Jefferson.
Perhaps the biggest question is Murray’s health. He has played 30 games over the past three years due to a torn ACL and a foot injury. In 2024, the last time Murray played every game in a season, he threw 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while winning eight starts with a team in the brutally tough NFC West.
The sooner Murray can separate himself from the competition and win the starting job, the better. Murray told reporters during OTAs that splitting starting reps is hard because he hasn't done it before.
He would also make a statement by winning the job earlier and not giving McCarthy a realistic shot. After that, the Vikings can move forward and expect a talented roster and coaching staff to help Murray reach the early-career heights he did before injuries piled up.
