Antonelli Out Of Engine Parts: What FIA Documents Reveal About Mercedes' Penalty Squeeze

The FIA publishes a boring little PDF before every race weekend called the Technical Delegate's Report. Almost nobody reads it. This year it's the most interesting document in the paddock, because it tells you which championship contenders are about to get mugged by their own spare parts bin.

Pull up the Hungary edition , scroll to car 12, and Mercedes' second-half problem is laid out in a single row of digits. Kimi Antonelli has used four internal combustion engines, three turbochargers, four exhaust sets, two MGU-Ks, three energy stores, three control electronics units and five ancillary components.

Now check that against the ceiling. The FIA spells the allocations out in plain language in its Spa report , where Isack Hadjar's engine was flagged as "the fifth (5th) of the four (4) new internal combustion engines allowed." Four ICEs. Four turbos. Four exhaust sets. Three MGU-Ks, three energy stores, three control electronics units, six ancillaries.

Do the subtraction. The championship leader is out of engines, out of exhausts, out of batteries and out of control electronics. He has exactly one turbocharger, one MGU-K and one ancillary component left in the bank. Every other box is empty, and it's only August.

What "empty" actually costs

Under the 2026 rules the elements are rationed individually, which cuts both ways. A cracked engine no longer drags the whole hybrid system onto the penalty sheet — but each fresh element you take beyond your allowance is its own separate offence. The penalty scale is ten grid places the first time you exceed the limit on a given component, five places for every subsequent one, all cumulative.

Hadjar is the cautionary tale. Red Bull fitted him a fresh ICE, turbo and exhaust at Spa in one go, and because each was a first exceedance of its own type, he collected three separate ten-place hits. The final grid shows a 30-place penalty for car 6, alongside 20 for Fernando Alonso and ten apiece for Lando Norris, Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz. Norris qualified third and started 13th over a single control electronics box.

There is a mercy rule of sorts, though it isn't much of one. Article B2.5.4 of the sporting regulations says any classified driver carrying more than 15 unserved grid places simply starts behind every other classified driver. Once you're past that threshold, the penalty stops compounding — which is precisely why teams, when they finally give in, tend to dump three or four components at once rather than bleeding out ten places at a time over consecutive Sundays.

Why the electrics are the real worry, not the engine

Here's the nuance the headline arithmetic misses: Antonelli's engine is young. The Spa paperwork shows he installed that fourth ICE and fourth exhaust set at the Belgian Grand Prix, so both have covered exactly two race weekends. Barring a genuine failure, the combustion side should coast to Abu Dhabi.

The parts that should keep Brackley up at night are the ones with no headroom and a documented habit of quitting. Mercedes described Antonelli's Barcelona retirement as an electrical shutdown. Russell's Canada DNF was the same family of problem. Neither was a rod through the block — they were the battery and the switching hardware, which is exactly what modern hybrid ownership looks like at every level of the market. Ask anyone who's had a plug-in hybrid stranded by a contactor or a DC-DC converter rather than anything with pistons in it.

That's the awkward part for Mercedes. Energy stores and control electronics are capped at three, Antonelli has burned all three, and the failure mode that ended his Spanish Grand Prix lives in precisely those components. He isn't managing risk; he's managing a countdown.

Wolff, for his part, has been unusually blunt in Mercedes' own race report about where the team's weakness sits, saying it needs to "keep developing and improve our reliability" if it wants to convert two championship leads into two trophies.

The Monza logic, and why 2026 complicates it

The received wisdom says you take your medicine at a track where the field is easy to carve through, and Monza — 80% of the lap at full throttle, a 1.1km pit straight, Norris averaging 263km/h on his 2024 pole lap — has always been the friendliest place to start deep in the pack. That logic is why the circuit gets floated every year.

It's shakier now. DRS is gone. Overtaking depends on the manual override, which under the FIA's per-event power unit information only unlocks inside one second of the car ahead, past a fixed detection line, with a per-lap recharge ceiling set circuit by circuit — 8.5MJ in Hungary, rising to 9.0MJ with override active. Monza is the most energy-starved venue on the calendar. There is almost no braking to harvest from, which means the cars scavenge charge at full throttle instead, giving up straight-line speed to do it. Recovering from 15th at a track where your battery is already rationed is a very different proposition than it was in the DRS era.

There's also a scheduling trap. The teams reconvene at Zandvoort on 21-23 August, which F1 has confirmed is a sprint weekend — one hour of practice, then parc fermé bites early and stays bitten. It is a terrible place to shake down unfamiliar hardware. Monza follows on 4-6 September with a conventional three-practice format, which makes it the first sane opportunity to commission anything new whether Mercedes wants the penalty there or not.
