The Atlanta Braves have had an interesting situation at shortstop ever since Dansby Swanson signed with the Chicago Cubs . At times, the Braves have struggled to get consistent production from the position.
Atlanta is looking to capture another World Series title after defeating the Houston Astros in 2021. The shortstop position was expected to belong to Ha-Seong Kim, but he has been injured for most of the season. With Kim set to return, Braves insider Mark Bowman suggested the clubhouse may not be thrilled with the move.
“I think it would be wrong... If Jarvis keeps playing like this he needs to be in there, if they want him to sit against lefties and put Dubon on short that is fine," Bowman said. "Bringing Kim back to this club, I don't think there will be a lot of happy guys in that clubhouse. Jarvis has earned the playing time."
Kim has spent the past few weeks on a rehab assignment. On Monday, Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos officially announced that Kim would be reinstated while Jorge Mateo was designated for assignment.
“Alex Anthopoulos says that SS Ha-Seong Kim is back. Jorge Mateo has been DFA’d. Alex says that the plan has always been to bring Kim back after his rehab stint,” 680 The Fan’s Barrett Sallee wrote.
Although Kim is returning to the roster, Anthopoulos has already named Jarvis the starting shortstop for the time being.
“Anthopoulos said Jarvis will remain the starting shortstop. Dubon will be used at a variety of positions while remaining an everyday player,” Bowman posted.
This is not the decision many Braves fans were hoping for, as Kim has been a major disappointment this season. Mateo was also a respected clubhouse presence and was consistently engaged with his teammates during games.
Mateo has earned $14 million throughout his MLB career. Kim will need to deliver a significant turnaround, or the decision to part ways with Mateo could prove to be a mistake. Mateo provides tremendous speed and valuable depth, making him a reliable option when called upon. As a backup shortstop, there is a strong argument that Mateo offered more value. However, if Kim can reestablish himself as the player the Braves expected him to be, this decision could ultimately prove to be the right one.
