The Boston Red Sox sent Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals in exchange for infielder Curtis Mead. Unfortunately, Mead sustained a broken wrist in his first game, and now the Red Sox need more than just a shortstop.
In pursuit of some infield trade options, the Red Sox have been met with steep asking prices that might limit who they could add. But, recently, ESPN's David Schoenfield predicted the Red Sox would trade for an infielder who'd be fairly affordable.
Schoenfield is predicting that Craig Breslow and the Red Sox swing a trade with the Detroit Tigers in exchange for ex-New York Yankees and three-time All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres.

"Tigers trade Gleyber Torres to Red Sox," Schoenfield predicts. "Since we have the Tigers trading Skubal, it follows that the next domino would be for them to trade Torres, who is also heading to free agency."
Schoenfield is predicting the Red Sox trade for Torres from the Tigers, a team that has been a fringe contender this year, and might not have sold at the beginning of July.
But now, with only a few days to go until the deadline, Detroit is looking likely to trade from its big league roster. If Tarik Skubal goes, which Schoenfield is predicting will happen, then Torres should follow suit.
Boston would make a lot of sense for Torres, who could easily replace Mead as the team's planned second baseman. Torres is a 29-year-old infielder and three-time All-Star.

He's played just 52 games this season after missing most of the year due to injury, but in those games, he's posted 1.7 bWAR with a .270 batting average and a .775 OPS.
Torres has been a good hitter, and as a rental infielder who is making $22.025 million on a qualifying offer this season, he'd make a lot of sense for the Red Sox to acquire without spending a fortune.
Adding Torres would make a lot of sense, and he'd be right up there with Xavier Edwards and Luis Arraez as second base trade targets for the Red Sox this summer.
While the former Yankees infielder might not be the eye-catching name that Arraez might be, or the long-term option like Edwards, he's a fantastic rental to give the Boston infield a stable veteran presence for a postseason push.
