I will begin with our regular reminder not to get too high or too low based on reports from training camp. But, the Chicago Bears had what one beat reporter characterized as their “sloppiest” offensive outing at practice this training camp in practice #6. There was also a bit of a scare when Luther Burden was involved in a three player collision and was slow to get up. That said, there were still some offensive highlights and some defenders who shined today. Let’s get into it.
Dan Wiederer of The Athletic noted the offensive struggles included “Pre-snap penalties. Misfired passes. Dropped balls. Rickety screen plays. QB1’s feet getting tangled coming out from center.” He also noted the offense failed in its end-of-game situation reps.
As noted above, Luther Burden had a collision in the end zone during this situational drill. Zach Pearson of the BearReport described it this way, “on the final play for the first team offense in a situation drill, Luther Burden took a bit (sic) on a collision in the end zone. Looked like Devin Bush hit him hard. Burden was slow to get up. Tyrique Stevenson walked with him to the sideline.” He also indicated Rome Odunze had some words for the defense after the play. Still, Pearson also stated that Burden appeared to be “okay” after the hit and was moving around on the sideline.
Nicholas Moreano of REKAP & BearsRTB said it was defensive back Anthony Johnson Jr. who made contact with Burden in the back. But he also agreed that Burden was OK in the end.
Courtney Cronin (ESPN) also reported on the Burden hit, suggesting he “got blown up pretty good at the goal line trying to catch a pass on the final plays of the 2MD. Slow to get up but walked off the field under his own power flanked by Caleb Williams and Tyrique Stephenson.”
Mark Carman agreed with Wiederer’s assessment that the offense was “off” in his top three takeaways. Noted “multiple penalties, incompletions. Ball was sailing.” Carman thought that the practice was much more physical than Monday’s practice, and he noted that RB Salvon Ahmed flashed again.
Josh Buckhalter of ClockerSports continues to monitor the left tackle competition, noting that Braxton Jones was LT1 today and, in his assessment, has the lead in the competition for now. Buckhalter also noted that it was a good day for Tyson Bagent running the second team offense. And we got more “wow” play from Colston Loveland.
A few other nuggets from the day.
The Chicago Bears signed DB Marlen Sewell – seems more like a camp body than a potential stopgap for Coby Bryant.
Patrick Finley reported on the first fight of Bears camp with Jordan van den Berg body slamming offensive lineman Caden Barnett.

Coby Bryant thanked everyone for the prayers and the love in the wake of his knee injury suffered in Monday’s practice:

Courtney Cronin noted that today featured a heavy dose of 13 personnel (reminder – that is an offensive set that features one running back and three tight ends):
Dennis Allen promised a heavy dose of 13 personnel today and 5 minutes into the first team period of camp, it’s clear the emphasis is gonna be running out of 13 today. Live tackling has commenced on the second day of pads.
