Through it all, the coaching staff has remained steadfast in their execution of this quarterback competition, while some on the outside consider it already Kyler Murray's job to lose.
With so many people believing this is Murray's job to lose at this point, it has led some to speculate that the Vikings should or could trade J.J. McCarthy. The latest person to discuss such a thing is Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox .
He named trade candidates for every NFL team, and when it came to the Vikings, he named McCarthy. He writes, "The caveat here is that the Minnesota Vikings should only consider moving J.J. McCarthy if they're 100 percent certain that free-agent addition Kyler Murray is the better option at quarterback. If McCarthy looks like the better 2026 option, Murray, who is on a one-year deal, could become the more sensible trade candidate. . .Of course, McCarthy is a former first-round pick who has a very limited NFL resume. Some team is going to give him a second chance. Minnesota could recoup at least part of its investment by making him available in a trade—remember that Trey Lance was arguably an even bigger NFL disappointment and still brought a fourth-round pick after two seasons."
For some idea of value, the Arizona Cardinals traded away Josh Rosen, whom they had traded the year prior in 2019; they only got a second-round pick. Could there be a team that sees value in McCarthy and thinks they could fix him up? Perhaps, but getting a second-round pick doesn't seem feasible at this point.
