See the full story · 1 sourcesWayne Newton Post 346 received a forfeit baseball victory Wednesday morning in the American Legion Great Lakes Regional and will play for the first time at 4 p.m. Thursday in a winners’ bracket game.
Now 35-5, Post 346 will play the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between Washington (Mo.) and Owensboro (Ky.). Post 346 is 4-0 against those teams, going 3-0 against Washington and beating Owensboro in the championship game of the John Hayes Invitational.
“But all of them have been really close games,” coach Jason Fields cautioned.
Coach Fields has another situation to deal with too. Injuries and college commitments have cost him four players for the rest of the tournament, leaving him with 13 players (10 of whom have pitched this summer).
Terre Haute was expecting to play Valparaiso Post 94, the team that beat it 1-0 in the state championship last week, but a protest was filed against Valparaiso when the eight coaches convened Tuesday night.
Valparaiso has played in a northern Indiana college-bound league — as well as its American Legion schedule — for several years, and played twice since winning the Indiana state tournament.
Rule 6D of American Legion baseball specifies that dual participation cannot continue once the American Legion tournament schedule begins, so eight Valparaiso players (on its 15-man roster) were ruled ineligible.
And had Post 346 not replaced the Wisconsin state champion, Indiana would not have a representative at the regional.
