In a quad match that was played on Tuesday, Aug. 4, Notre Dame’s Garrett Barbarits shot a four-over 40 to post the low round individually in a nine-hole outing at Elks Country Club that featured Notre Dame, South Webster, West and Waverly Tuesday evening.
West, who shot a 37-over 181, edged Notre Dame’s 43-over 187 to win by six strokes. South Webster posted a 51-over 195 to claim third while Waverly’s 71-over 215 rounded out the four team field.
Owen Richards, who finished just one stroke back of Barbarits’ winning mark, claimed a 41 to lead the Senators in their winning effort, while Harrison Richards (44), Cason Frump (46) and Logan Journey (50) were the four scoring hands in West’s winning total.
Bentley Day’s 51 and Elliott Kegley’s 56 represented the individual scores for West in the quad match.
Evans signs with Marshall track and field program
Continuing a run of Wheelersburg standouts who are continuing their careers at the next level, multi-sport standout and OHSAA Division III State Runner-Up long jumper Kenyon Evans will continue his career with the Marshall Thundering Herd’s track and field program.
Evans, who caught 37 passes for 450 yards and three touchdowns offensively and led Wheelersburg defensively with 13 pass deflections and four interceptions, enjoyed a tremendous track and field season, particularly as a long jumper.
Evans ultimately won four district championships as a senior alone, claiming titles in the 100 meter dash (10.89), 200 meter dash (22.32), high jump (six feet, four inches) and long jump (22 feet, three inches). Evans then posted jumps of 22 feet, 11 inches and six feet, three inches in the long and high jumps, respectively, to qualify for the OHSAA Division III State Championship in both events.
Evans then enjoyed career-best performances in both events at the state meet, finishing second with a 24-foot, one-and-a-half inch long jump and third with a six-foot, six-inch high jump.
Evans’ performance in the long jump would’ve resulted in a OHSAA State Championship in any other division. The senior’s long jump ranked 81st in the entire country among all high schoolers and was second in Ohio only to the eventual OHSAA Division III State Champion, Cleveland Glenville’s Jay’vier Kerr. Kerr signed with NCAA Division I Texas Christian.
Evans joins fellow classmate and Wheelersburg teammate Cashton Adkins as Marshall track and field signees in the 2026 recruiting haul for the Thundering Herd.
