Joe Burrow Breaks Silence on Wild Jayden Daniels-LSU Dispute

Washington Commanders franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels and his family are currently in the middle of a dispute with his former alma mater, LSU. He had two strong seasons there, winning the Heisman Trophy in 2023 after throwing for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns, and just four interceptions, completing 72.2% of his passes to go along with 1,134 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. He posted the highest single-season passing efficiency rating in FBS history (208.0) and the second-highest single-season total offensive yardage (4,946) in program history.
Yet despite his continued strong association with the LSU brand, the Tigers allowed sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett to wear his iconic No. 5 jersey. In response, Daniels' attorneys sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding that the school stop using his name, image, and likeness (NIL). He and his family expected the university to protect his number and reportedly felt " profoundly disrespected " when it was assigned to Pickett.
Daniels may feel particularly slighted given how differently LSU has treated another former Heisman-winning quarterback: Joe Burrow. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback addressed the situation Thursday after the Bengals' 16-14 preseason win over the Detroit Lions.
"They told me that they wouldn't use it again, but you never know what happens," Burrow said, noting that LSU had promised to protect his No. 9 jersey. Asked about Daniels' situation specifically, Burrow said: "I don't necessarily have too many thoughts at this time. I just heard about it a couple of hours ago. I don't know enough about the situation to have any thoughts."

Like Daniels, Burrow only spent two seasons at LSU, but his tenure included one of the greatest seasons in college football history. In 2019, he led the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 record and a national championship, throwing for 5,671 yards, 60 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, completing 76.3% of his passes to go along with 368 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. His 6,055 total offensive yards and 65 total touchdowns both remain single-season records in FBS history.
Burrow and Daniels represent arguably the two greatest quarterbacks in LSU history, one of the most storied programs in college football. It's natural to assume the school would treat them similarly, even though Daniels didn't experience the same level of team success as Burrow did. Time will tell how the situation unfolds.
