Irving’s latest recollections suggest that Bryant’s most valuable influence on him extended well beyond the basketball court.
Kobe Bryant Encouraged Kyrie Irving to Look Beyond Proving His Doubters Wrong
For Irving, achieving the highest level of basketball success happened relatively early in his career. Even with a championship already on his résumé, Irving began searching for something more meaningful.
Bryant was widely recognized for his relentless pursuit of knowledge. The Lakers legend routinely studied successful people from different industries. He saw that same curiosity in Irving and understood that the young star was interested not only in becoming a better basketball player but also in understanding life.

Because of that, Bryant recommended that Irving read The Alchemist, believing the book could help him change his perspective and become less consumed with proving his critics wrong.
“He knew how curious I was, not just about being great at the game, but about life,” Irving said . “That’s why he gave me the book ‘The Alchemist’ and told me to read that. Kobe’s smart. He studied all the greats in every other industry so he could figure out how to be great too.”
“It was about really taking the time to get to know who the people are around you. Get to know them as much as you invest in watching the game. I’m an avid student of all the greats in basketball.”

Rather than offering standard advice on how to handle media pressure or dissect opposing defenses, Bryant handed Irving literature designed to reshape his relationship with his own ambition.
Through The Alchemist, Bryant taught Irving that fixation on the end goal robs a person of the richness found within the process itself.
“The journey is the reward. Embrace the journey. Don’t think about the end goal so much where you’re fixated on trying to prove people wrong or be at the mountaintop without going through the details that it takes to really appreciate it. That was him.”
“His mentorship was like, ‘Yo, stay curious, bro. I know you’re different. You’re not like everybody else out here.’”
Bryant’s legacy lives on in many ways, through highlight reels, championship banners, and game-winning shots. But in the life of Irving, Bryant’s legacy is measured in perspective.
Kyrie Irving’s Future in Dallas Mavericks Remains a Major Question
Irving is preparing to return after missing the entire 2025-26 season because of a torn ACL suffered in March 2025. Meanwhile, questions remain about whether Irving will actually remain with the franchise for the long term.
NBA reporter Ira Winderman recently explained that Miami could technically construct a trade package for Irving, but he believes the scenario remains highly unlikely.

“you could make the math work with Portis, Nikola Jovic and Davion Mitchell,” Winderman repprted. “But Dallas would do that why? It would mean taking on three more years of Jovic and one more of Portis, plus having to waive three players. So, yes, there is math that could be argued but common sense, and the lack of remaining Heat draft capital after the Giannis trade, speak otherwise.
“Yes, with Dallas buying out Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving, at 34, also would appear misaligned for a team turning to the youth of Cooper Flagg and other prospects. But other teams probably could offer more, if so inclined.”
For now, Mavericks general manager Masai Ujiri appears interested in seeing how Irving’s elite scoring ability and championship experience complement Flagg. Head coach Dusty May has similarly indicated that Dallas intends to benefit from Irving’s veteran leadership.
Still, there is uncertainty surrounding Irving’s long-term future in Dallas Mavericks . If the Mavericks struggle early in the season, league insiders remain skeptical that the organization will automatically keep Irving through the trade deadline.
