Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal wasted little time Wednesday. Entering Wednesday's anticipated appearance against the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday with 999 career strikeouts, Skubal earned a career milestone by coming back to whiff leadoff batter Taylor Ward.
Down 3-1 in the count, Skubal induced Ward to swing and miss on a 95-mph four-seam fastball and an 84-mph changeup, creating team history at Comerica Park.

One of the biggest names on the MLB trade deadline market, Skubal reached the 1,000-strikeout milestone in 857 innings, the fastest pitcher in franchise history. He snapped the mark established by Max Scherzer (944.2 innings).
Skubal became the 17th franchise pitcher to reach 1,000 strikeouts. He was the fourth left-hander, joining Mickey Lolich (2,679 strikeouts), Hal Newhouser (1,769) and John Hiller (1,036).
In his first 46.2 innings since returning from early-season elbow surgery, Skubal, the back-to-back Cy Young award recipient, recorded a 2,70 ERA with 65 strikeouts and 0.90 WHIP.
With the trade deadline on Aug. 3, Skubal could have made his final start with the Tigers on Wednesday.
First baseman Spencer Torkelson's third-inning single marked No. 500 in his career.
