All eyes on Stephen Curry after the Golden State Warriors failed to land LeBron James in free agency.
Steph Curry finds himself at a tough crossroads in Golden State. At 38, he’s still playing elite basketball, but the Warriors’ title window is closing fast.
Draymond Green even opted out of his contract to give the front office financial room to chase LeBron James in free agency, but LeBron chose Philadelphia instead. With Draymond back on a one-year deal and the roster getting older, Golden State came away empty-handed in their search for another star.
Now, with few options left to upgrade, Curry faces the reality that the franchise might finally be forced to plan for life after the dynasty.
Stephen Curry’s clause situation with the Warriors
Steph Curry actually does not have an official written no-trade clause in his NBA contract, the Warriors refused to include one when negotiating his extension.
An official No-Trade Clause (NTC) in the NBA is a specific, legally binding line written directly into a player’s contract that grants them explicit veto power over any trade. (Very few players in NBA history have had one negotiated directly into their deals).
Instead, he has a de facto no-trade clause. Because of everything he’s done for Golden State, the organization would never trade him anywhere unless he specifically asked for it and signed off on the destination. He effectively has 100% control over if and where he moves, even without it written on paper.
This comes amid rumours of a potential trade to the Toronto Raptors, who have a special place in his heart, as his bond with Toronto runs deep.
His father, Dell, closed out his NBA career playing for the Raptors, and Steph spent key childhood years going to middle school in the area. Add in his wife Ayesha’s roots growing up in Ontario, and it makes sense.
However, there’s no way the Warriors would sell their star man, unless it made absolute sense trade wise.
