See the full story · 2 sourcesAfter penning a sweeping article about the nearly 24-hour days of Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton during the AFC playoff run in 2025, ESPN writer Seth Wickersham opened up about one of the biggest decisions of the Broncos ' offseason: the handing of the offensive reins from Payton to offensive coordinator Davis Webb.
"You know, (Payton) refers to himself as a playcaller, almost as much as he does as a head coach," Wickersham said during a recent interview about his article on The Rich Eisen Show . "But I think there was moments during the season, and I witnessed them, and we talked about it, where the insecurity of calling plays was starting to creep in a little bit. At one point, he said it's a lot harder to call plays at age 62 than age 42.
"I think it's a little like when you get a little older; maybe you don't like to drive at night in the rain, is at least how he put it. And so, you know, I think that it's going to be an interesting transition to Davis Webb. I think that there's going to be moments where Sean overrules (Webb). There's going to be moments where he wants to overrule him and doesn't."

Webb himself talked about the role Sean Payton has in the offense, despite handing the reins over. "This is a Sean Payton-coached football team," Webb said during the second week of OTAs . "This is a Sean Payton offensive philosophy.”
Former Broncos quarterback Ben DiNucci also told fans to expect shorter huddles and more 'NASCAR' (no-huddle) offense from Webb, who has been influenced by those types of systems throughout his own playing career in college and in the NFL.
With training camp underway, fans and players will get their first on-field looks at the new offensive system under Webb in the coming weeks.
