The New England Patriots ' run game remains a key component of their success. Last season, veteran Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 603 yards and seven touchdowns on 130 carries, averaging 4.6 yards per carry, to go along with 345 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. Rookie second-rounder TreVeyon Henderson finished as the lead back with 911 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 180 carries, averaging 5.1 yards per carry, along with 221 receiving yards and a receiving score.
That's one of the best running back tandems in the NFL , and if either were to go down, it would put immense pressure on the backups, which are currently second-year backs Terrell Jennings and Lan Larison, along with seventh-round rookie Jam Miller — a trio with limited NFL experience.
Undrafted rookie free agent Myles Montgomery was supposed to help address that depth concern, but after sustaining an injury, the Patriots chose to waive him and, in a corresponding move, sign veteran Hassan Haskins .

Haskins was selected in the fourth round (No. 131 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, back when Mike Vrabel was still their head coach. He spent just one season with the Titans before landing on injured reserve ahead of 2023 and eventually being waived prior to the 2024 season. The Los Angeles Chargers picked him up shortly after, and he's played the last two seasons in LA.
Over his career, Haskins has appeared in 44 games, rushing for 229 yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries — a 3.0 yards-per-carry average — to go along with 119 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. He saw his most extensive action as a rookie with the Titans under Vrabel, which could signal the team sees a real role for him in New England.
Since taking over as Patriots head coach, Vrabel has brought over several of his former players from his Tennessee days, including Harold Landry III, Austin Hooper, Jack Gibbens, and Josh Dobbs, among others. Haskins is just the latest example. If he makes the 53-man roster by the end of the month, he'd provide the team valuable veteran depth behind Stevenson and Henderson.
New England kicks off its preseason Thursday against the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium, before closing out the exhibition slate against the Philadelphia Eagles (Saturday, Aug. 22) and Cleveland Browns (Thursday, Aug. 27). Across those three games, Haskins should get a chance to see the field.
