Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow’s status is uncertain for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, as Shohei Ohtani’s return looms.
The Dodgers will ask Ohtani to throw in a bullpen session Friday, and if he feels good, the Japanese star will pitch against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
According to Dave Roberts, Glasnow can either start Sunday’s game in case Ohtani is not ready, or he could come in later on, or just push his pitching return down the road.
By all accounts, barring any notable setback, Ohtani will likely start and pitch either one or two innings before Glasnow takes over as the piggyback pitcher.

The Dodgers are trying their best to get Ohtani back up to speed, and since they can’t end him out on a rehab stint due to his importance in the lineup, he will need to serve as an opener until he can provide length.
Naturally, they need a plan for who follows Ohtani so the bullpen doesn’t get burnt up.
The Dodgers have a ton of pitchers who can do a long relief role, and in the postseason, Glasnow is all but certain to take up that kind of piggyback role if needed or do high-leverage work.

Glasnow is one of the Dodgers’ moveable pieces, and while he certainly has a preference to start, he has shown the willingness to do whatever it takes.

He is no stranger to being a piggy or even a reliever in the bullpen, and his even-keeled personality allows him to be a true Swiss Army piece for Dave Roberts.
Most starters need to keep a routine, or they grow frustrated, and luckily for the Dodgers, Glasnow is a pitcher who puts his head down and does what the team needs.
The Dodgers are juggling Ohtani’s return while moving multiple pitchers in and out of the bullpen, like Eric Lauer and possibly even Justin Wrobleski, while other injured pitchers remain on the outskirts.
Glasnow is a guy making things better and easier for the team when needed.
