Patrick Mahomes has spent most of his career as the standard against which every NFL quarterback is measured. However, a new set of rankings suggests the Kansas City Chiefs superstar no longer owns the league’s top spot.
Mahomes landed at No. 4 in Bleacher Report’s NFL 1000 quarterback rankings , released on Aug. 3. Matthew Stafford, Josh Allen and Justin Herbert were all ranked ahead of the three-time Super Bowl MVP entering the 2026 season.
It is a jarring result for a player who has already assembled one of the greatest resumes in NFL history.
Why Patrick Mahomes fell to No. 4
Bleacher Report’s scouting department graded non-rookie quarterbacks in six areas: accuracy, processing, arm talent, decision-making, leadership and pocket presence.
Mahomes received a score of 91 out of 100. He earned perfect marks for arm talent, leadership and pocket presence, but his accuracy grade of 20 out of 25 created separation between him and the quarterbacks above him.
The original B/R scouting report pointed to Mahomes’ inconsistent decision-making, lower-body mechanics and deep-ball accuracy during the 2025 season. His torn ACL was also identified as something worth monitoring ahead of 2026.
Despite those concerns, the evaluators made it clear that Mahomes remains one of football’s most gifted players. His arm strength and ability to improvise when protection breaks down have not disappeared.

Matthew Stafford takes over as QB1
Stafford earned the top ranking and a grade of 93 after throwing for more than 4,700 yards and 46 touchdowns during his MVP-winning 2025 season.
Allen followed at No. 2 with a score of 92, while Herbert edged Mahomes in the tiebreaking process after both received grades of 91.
Joe Burrow completed the top five. Drake Maye, Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott, Jordan Love and Brock Purdy rounded out the top 10.
Mahomes falling to fourth does not mean the Chiefs should suddenly question their franchise quarterback. It does, however, show how quickly the NFL’s quarterback hierarchy can change.
The 30-year-old now enters 2026 with two significant challenges: returning to full strength following ACL surgery and proving that one uneven season did not permanently end his reign as the NFL’s undisputed QB1.
