The San Antonio Spurs are coming off their most successful season in recent history after making their first NBA Finals appearance in a decade. Although they ultimately fell short of their championship goal, the organization has no doubts about its commitment to veteran point guard De’Aaron Fox.
Despite a difficult NBA Finals showing that included some costly late-game mistakes against the New York Knicks , the Spurs remain firmly behind Fox and continue to view him as an important part of their championship plans.
ESPN’s Michael C. Wright reported that San Antonio remains fully committed to Fox, sharing that the Spurs believe they may not have reached the NBA Finals without the veteran guard’s contributions throughout the season.
“After Fox's rough showing in the NBA Finals, team sources said the Spurs remain committed to the veteran, pointing out that San Antonio might have never reached the Finals without the point guard's contributions while playing on a high right ankle sprain,” Wright wrote .
Fox appeared in 72 regular-season games and operated as San Antonio’s primary floor general during its impressive 62-win season. His steady play earned him his second career All-Star selection, while he averaged 18.6 points and 6.2 assists per game.
However, the perception surrounding Fox changed considerably during the 2026 NBA Finals. His late-game turnover and subsequent blocked shot in Game 4 became the most talked-about moments of the series, as the Knicks capitalized on those plays to complete a dramatic comeback victory, ultimately winning the trophy.
Across five games in the Finals against New York, Fox averaged 12.8 points, 6.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game. While those numbers were below his regular-season production, the Spurs appear unwilling to judge his overall value solely on his Finals performance.
