Hamlin finished fifth in the Brickyard 400 on July 26 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a race won by Corey Heim.
Carson Hocevar moved into fifth after a strong points day. Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott both finished outside the top 30, creating a jumbled group from fifth through 10th going into the final month of the regular season.
