Police in Texas concluded an investigation into the death of Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver’s 1-year-old son with no criminal findings, a report noted on Monday.
Oliver’s toddler son died in an accidental drowning at his Texas home in June, with the news breaking this weekend of the tragedy. The Bills have released a statement supporting Oliver, who returned for training camp and played in the first preseason game.
Police Close Case on Ed Oliver’s Son’s Death
As reporter John Wawrow of The Associated Press reported, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office on Monday released a statement saying that the case is now closed.
âThe incident was thoroughly investigated by detectives, and their finding were no criminal findings. The case is now closed,â the police statement said.
Authorities said the boy was found unresponsive in a swimming pool, then transported to the hospital and pronounced dead. The toddler was just a few days shy of his second birthday, the report added.
Oliver has not spoken directly about the tragedy, but the team released a statement supporting the family and noting that they asked for privacy and prayers.
Bills Quarterback Josh Allen Sends Condolences
News of the death of Oliver’s son first surfaced on social media on Friday evening, the day before the Bills were set to take on the Cleveland Browns in their second preseason game. The team confirmed the tragic news just before kickoff, a game in which Oliver did not travel with the team while recovering from an injury suffered earlier that week.
Allen said he was doing everything he could to support Oliver, while also angry at how the news was leaked without confirmation from Oliver and against the wishes of the family to keep the matter private.
âHow it came out makes me very, very sad and angry at the same time,â Allen told reporters after Saturday’s game, via Syracuse.comâs Matt Parrino .
âI canât imagine what heâs going through, but the way that heâs dealt with it has been unbelievable,â he added. âThereâs nothing that you can say to make the situation any better except being there for Ed in whatever way he needs.â
Reports indicated that Oliver had kept the matter private as the family grieved, and even some teammates didn’t know until news was leaked on Friday. Allen said the team has been supporting the veteran defensive tackle.
âWhat weâve been doing is giving him his space and time, but at the same time being around him, loving up on him, but not trying to do anything to reopen that,â Allen said. âJust guys being around him and putting their hand on him and not having to say too much. But I got your back.â
