LeBron James had one main reason for moving to the Philadelphia 76ers over the other teams he was considering.
James will be returning to the Eastern Conference for the first time in eight years after signing a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers.
The move clearly wasn’t about the money, as James is on a veteran’s minimum. But it appears the championship factor may have taken a backseat to a bigger motivating factor.

LeBron James prioritized his family during decision to join Philadelphia 76ers
Speaking on NBA Today, ESPN insider Shams Charania revealed that LeBron James did not prioritize money when signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Crucially, his decision came down to his wife, Savannah, and their children, Bronny, Bryce, and Zhuri, accepting Philadelphia and giving him the go-ahead to sign with the 76ers.
“It was obvious. Money was of no consequence, no significance for LeBron James in this decision to sign with the Sixers. He’s playing for the veteran’s minimum contract, the lowest amount that he can play for.
“He made a decision at the outset of free agency that he was going to go somewhere he felt he had the best chance to win a championship. Damn the money. It didn’t matter what it came with.
“You think about the last hurdle over the last week or so, as LeBron James was sifting through the Cavaliers, the Heat, the 76ers, and the Warriors, it was family.
“Going from LA all the way to the East Coast, that was a major change for LeBron James’ lifestyle, so once he got Savannah, his young daughter Zhuri, Bronny, and Bryce on board, he made the decision on Friday to go with the 76ers.”
Philadelphia 76ers players and coach all reached out to LeBron James.
In his reporting, Charania also revealed that Jaylen Brown approached LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, while Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and 76ers coach Nick Nurse speaking with James directly.
“He spoke to a few people, importantly. Jaylen Brown spoke to Rich Paul, his agent. But Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Nick Nurse all spoke to LeBron James during the process to recruit him, to get him on board with this.
“Nick Nurse was the only coach, per my understanding, that spoke to LeBron James during the process. That was very pivotal.”
The 76ers will be thrilled that their team effort to land LeBron James has paid off, as his signing makes them one of the favorites to win the NBA championship.
Some believe that this contract is the final one of James’ career, and he is looking to end his NBA tenure with at least one more NBA championship to his name.
