In a recent interview with Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show, Minter revealed what makes James the elite player he is.
"Derwin James was one of the biggest joys I've ever had in coaching," Minter said .
"Being around him for two years. The way that guy operates every second of the day makes him really special. And then again, you tie that in with like, how he plays on the field when you're a leader like that."
Minter is now the head coach of the Ravens , but for the last two seasons, he served as the Chargers' defensive coordinator. His exit from the Chargers organization came as no surprise, especially when a head coaching gig came knocking.
Although Minter is no longer with the team, he knows better than most what makes James such a special player.
Minter also added that he would love to embrace James after their Week 10 matchup on Monday Night Football.
"I think Derwin was the first player I met when I took the job there," Minter said.
"Our bond and relationship was really strong."
Minter went on to say how much he loves and respects the Chargers and the people in the organization.
"What we were able to kind of create together over a couple years there was really fun. I learned a lot about myself, and I learned a lot about how to be a leader. Learned a lot about how to really put it in the players' hands on the field, and a major shout-out to those guys."
The Chargers and Ravens have high hopes for the 2026 season, and they could end up standing in each other's way when it matters most.
