Dennis Santana cleared waivers and elected free agency after he was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Thursday.
Santana joined the Pirates as a waiver claim in the 2024 season and quickly established himself as one of the team’s better relievers. The right-hander went 1-1 with a 2.44 ERA in 39 relief appearances with the Pirates in 2024 and took on an even bigger role the following season.
Santana filled in as closer when the Pirates optioned closer David Bednar at the beginning of last season and took over the role when Bednar was traded to the Yankees at the deadline. In a team-high 70 appearances last season, Santana recorded 16 saves and posted a 2.18 ERA.
Pittsburgh was counting on Santana to be the primary closer this season but things quickly went awry. The 30-year-old went 2-5 with a 6.05 ERA through 44 appearances prior to getting DFA’d last week.
